The Route des Grandes Alpes (Great Alpine Road) is ca. 700km long route through the French Alps.
This route is starting from Lanslebourg-Mont-Cenis and the road starts to climb up to Le Collet and Bessans. Then it climbs higher and higher until you're in the highest possible mountain road in Europe! That is 2764 meters over the sea.
(There still might be the sign in the summit that says 2770m, but the latest measurements says the correct altitude is 2764, but you can ride higher if you want... just take the road to the skilift!)
I think it's unnecessary to say something about the views, it's also useless to say anything about the road. Stelvio may be more famous but this is higher and there's no city in the summit! there's only two buildings: A restaurant with a small shop and a church.
Then it's only raw mountain-nature all around you...
And then you still have to ride the amazing road down to Val d'Isere! And then to Bourg St Maurice.
(Ofcourse you can ride the route from north to south also!)
Here is a video from Val d'Isere to the top!
Ride and enjoy
