Even if you are not religious, this is an interesting place to visit during the winter when it's not too hot.
Salvation Mountain is an amazing art installation in the desert in Imperial County just east of the Salton Sea and about a hour and a half from Palm Springs. The artwork is made from adobe, straw, and thousands of gallons of lead-free paint.
Leonard Knight, who made the artwork, died on February 10, 2014, but volunteers are working to protect and maintain the site.

Visiting the location is enough, but a picture would be nice too.
