This is the first part of the B741 New Cumnock to Girvan route. The road B741 starts on the A76 at a mini-roundabout in New Cumnock and heads southwest. The road continues across the open fields, reaching the hills to the south and starting to climb, whilst remaining in a vaguely southwesterly direction.
After skirting Peat Hill the road enters a forest and goes through this for a couple of miles, reaching a summit en route. The road then follows a stream for most of the way into Dalmellington. The road runs along High Main Street to a roundabout where it bears right along Main Street and soon reaches a T-junction on the A713. There is a short multiplex to the right before the B741 regains its number by turning left. The B741 continues westwards. It quickly goes over the River Doon at a narrow bridge, climbing up into the hills ahead. It crosses the moor, widening again in the process.
This thirty mile stretch across the south Ayrshire countryside is a good stretch. It’s nice and quiet and has some excellent sections with good flowing corners.
Enjoy your ride in either direction!
