The first fortresses might have been build in wood by the first inhabitants of Saaremaa. They needed to put up stiff resistance to foreign efforts to Christianise them. The first stone walls were build somewhere after 1350-1380 by Teutonic order.
Kuressaare castle is considered one of the best preserved medieval fortifications in Estonia. The defence tower is 37 meters high. To enter inside the castle and its courtyard you need to pay 5€ fee but it is certainly worth paying!
Walk trough the gates to the castle area. No need to visit the mueum (inside the castle).
