The original Route 66 (or U.S. 66) was established on November 11, 1926. It was 2448 miles from Chicago through Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona before ending at Santa Monica, California.
In 1956 it was declined from the Highway System and many parts of the original route were soon without maintenance.
The first Route 66 associations were founded in Arizona in 1987 and Missouri in 1989 and soon other states followed. The route 66 was alive again since they started to erect Historic Route 66 markers and signs. There are also many old-style bars, restaurants and gas stations beside the road.
Since the original route had some major changes already in 1930's there's not too many original parts left. But this is maybe the most well known: The Historic Route 66 from Kingman to Seligman in Arizona.
