The tower was built in 13th century to help defend the town of Aigues-Mortes. The road ran right through the tower and the defenders of the tower would collect toll from travelers passing through. Eventually the passing through the tower proved too small and the road was rebuilt to run around the tower instead of through it. The tower was restored in the 1800s as a tourist attraction.
Note: Address is approximate, however the tower is easy to find as it is literally in the middle of D46. The official parking lot is south of the tower but it is probably okay to leave your bike right in front of it for a short time.
