Built by the former Soviet army, Kiltsi airfield covers an area of about 800 ha. Concrete runways are 2500 m long and it had 28 hangars for airplanes. Construction of the airfield began in 1939 and it was used until 1956; in 1969, it was reconstructed. After the departure of the Soviet army, the airfield fell into disrepair leaving behind old airplane hangars, barracks and runways. Adventure seekers should be careful in the old army base and not climb the ruins because of the danger of collapse.

Good to know: the ruins of the baroque Ungru castle next to the airfield provide a striking contrast to the military base.

According to Visit Estonia website when you arrive on the airfield, you should inform the Estonian Defence League at +372 7179949. You need to provide the make and number of your vehicle to be granted a permission to enter the airfield. To be honest I don't know if anyone does it really...
